Precise surfacing with LinDrive™.

With LinDrive™ from Linde Hydraulics Vögele pavers get their jobs done precisely, quickly and at a high standard of quality.

Both man and machine are faced with extremely tough challenges in today's road construction industry, as sections of motorway often need to be repaired or extended within very tight timeframes. Take, for example, the A1 in the north of Paris, which has to cope with a daily traffic volume of more than 200.000 vehicles: a 7-kilometre stretch of the road has been widened and now boasts 4 lanes instead of the 3 it had previously. It took just 9 nights to lay the new road surface across all the lanes. The road workers faced a nightly challenge to make sure the road was ready to cope with the daily rush hour the next morning - the tarmac surface needed to be fully cooled and had to have the appropriate road markings.

As well as tackling the tight timeframe, which required not only meticulous planning but also a guarantee that the road finishing machinery was available and that the workers could demonstrate absolute skill in its operation, the organisers also had to make sure the quality of the work was up to scratch. New roads need to be able to withstand the rigours of heavy car and truck traffic, and the tarmac surface must be top-quality and absolutely smooth level to ensure optimum driving comfort.

If projects of this nature are to succeed and produce good results, they require high-performance, reliable road finishing machinery that is easy to operate - such as the machinery successfully marketed worldwide by Joseph Vögele AG. Vögele realised long ago that the driving performance of the pavers has a decisive influence on the work result - and therefore on end quality and the cost effectiveness of using the machinery. With this vital consideration in mind, Vögele uses Linde Hydraulics drive technology in all its high-performance road finishing machinery (Super 1600-2/1603-2/1800-2/1803-2/1900-2/2100-2/2500 models).

Vögele Super 2500
Vögele Super 2500: Vögele pavers provide precise, fast and high-quality surfacing thanks to LinDrive™ from Linde Hydraulics.

The LinDrive™ driving philosophy from Linde Hydraulics focuses on the complete working system - including both man and machine. If an operator feels in complete control of the machinery, his work will be less stressful and his efforts more effective as a result. LinDrive™ does not focus purely on achieving optimum utilisation of the drive output and absolute reliability of the traction drive; it also ensures simple and intuitive operation.

This aspect contributes to the success of Vögele's wheel and tracked pavers in a variety of applications: When constructing roads and squares in urban areas, the swift and accurate implementation of driving commands ensures a high degree of mobility and manoeuvrability. Travel speeds of up to 20 km/h enable rapid deployment of the machinery, leading to enhanced cost-effectiveness.

Larger pavers such as the Super 1900-2/2100-2/2500 models, capable of paving widths of up to 16 m and reaching paving speeds of up to 25 m/min are used in the construction of motorways, runways and Formula 1 racing circuits. Such applications require precision operation of the machinery and excellent continuity of movement. It is therefore of fundamental importance that the two parallel drive trains work in synchronisation. This is the only way to achieve outstanding paving accuracy with tolerances of 5 mm for the intermediate layer and as little as 2 mm for the upper layer.

The technical basis for the LinDrive™ driving philosophy is the combination of the unique design features of the Series 02 pumps and motors. The hydrostatic bearing of the rotating group and the unusual steel-on-steel material combination of the piston/slipper assembly result in low-wear operation of the sturdy units, which in turn encourages reliable performance. The variable pump concept with position feedback control and a control system that functions irrespective of load guarantees superb controllability of Linde variable pumps.

Optimum continuity of movement ensures even, seamless surfacing. Irrespective of the material reservoir load, operating the machinery is child's play thanks to the precise, foreseeable vehicle responses. With HPV-02 variable displacement pumps, there is no need for the driver or the control unit to make adjustments or compensations.

The benefits of the variable pump concept are even greater when combined with the HMV-02 hydraulic motors. During the development of these motors, great emphasis was placed on refined running properties, in particular at low rotational speeds. Hydraulic motors from Linde Hydraulics therefore provide a significantly more constant and regular torque at very low speeds than conventional bent-axis motors, which have widely fluctuating torque characteristics. In practical applications, this means that HMV-02 variable displacement motors have excellent start-up characteristics when starting the heavy paving machinery. Moreover, they make it possible to steer and manoeuvre precisely even at low rotational speeds, and the paving speed required by the driver can be maintained with accuracy. Constant feed enables paving with millimetre precision, even across large widths. This means that the driver can focus his full attention on the operation of his machine.
